Story Hour: A Meeting with Literature and Bilingualism in Soledad, Atlántico

In the month of August, a special event called Story Hour was held in Soledad, Atlántico, organized by GLORIA VALDERRAMA FUNDARVE with a rural focus. This activity was designed to create spaces for meaningful interactions that bring children closer to literature as a fundamental reference for fostering knowledge related to the themes of The Adventures of Pili and The Adventures of Luna stories.

The Importance of Bilingual Education: For indigenous children in rural areas, access to education is not just about learning to read and write; it’s about preserving their cultural heritage while gaining the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Bilingual education plays a crucial role in this process, allowing children to learn in both their native language and Spanish. This dual-language approach helps them maintain a strong connection to their cultural identity while also preparing them for broader opportunities.

A Meeting with Literature

During the activity, first-grade girls and boys from the Isaac Newton District Educational Institution in Barranquilla, Atlántico, were immersed in the magical world of stories. Through storytelling in English, the children not only enjoyed Pili’s adventures but also took an important step towards bilingualism. Listening to the stories in a second language allowed the children to become familiar with English in a natural and enjoyable way, thus facilitating the development of their communication skills.

Promoting Bilingualism and a Love for Reading

Story Hour aims not only to bring children closer to literature but also to promote bilingualism from an early age. This initiative is part of the ongoing educational efforts of the Little Explorer, Big World project, whose mission is to bring learning and environmental awareness to remote communities while fostering literacy in multiple languages.

The experience not only enriched the participants with new words and expressions in English but also strengthened their love for reading and knowledge, laying the foundation for a future where bilingualism is a valuable and accessible skill.

This type of activity demonstrates the transformative power of education and the importance of creating opportunities for children to access resources that broaden their horizons and open doors to new cultures and languages. Story Hour was undoubtedly a success, leaving a significant impact on the young explorers of the Isaac Newton District Educational Institution.

Let’s continue to support initiatives that prioritize education, conservation, and cultural preservation, ensuring that every child, no matter where they live, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
